If you don’t regularly eat fish then the chances are that your body is not getting enough essential omega-3 fatty acids that it so desperately needs. Not only can fish oil help to keep your joints supple, the omega-3 fatty acids that it contains do a very effective job of fending off heart disease and lowering cholesterol. Two acids in particular, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), are important nutrients that your body relies on. Omega-3 supplements can be taken to bolster your levels of these fatty acids, however there are many different omega-3 fish oils on the market so choosing the right one is important.
Cutting Through the Jargon
If you'’re browsing the shelves of your local health food store or clicking through pages of an online supplements marketplace you’re likely to see a wide selection of omega-3 supplements. You’ll notice words like super critical and ultra critical emblazoned across the labels along with other marketing jargon. However, these words are not just there for show, as there is a distinct difference between regular, super critical and ultra critical omega-3 supplements. Here is what you need to know.
It’s All About Concentration
When you see omega-3 supplements labelled as super critical or ultra critical it means that they contain a higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. When you look at the label in more detail you should be able to see exactly how much omega-3 each capsule contains, along with concentrations of DHA and EPA. For example, one serving of a generic regular omega-3 supplement could contain 2000mg of fish oil, and in that there is 690mg of omega-3s, consisting of 220mg of DHA and 330mg of EPA. On the other hand, one serving of a super critical omega-3 supplement could also be 2000mg of fish oil, but contain 1280mg of omega-3s, which includes 450mg of DHA and 650mg of EPA. It’s double concentrate, so consuming the same amount of fish oil delivers twice as much of the nutrients you need.
Read the Label
There is very little in the way of regulation regarding the labeling of omega-3 supplements, and a variety of different language can be used to describe these different concentrations. The only sure way to know exactly what you are getting is by reading the label, so make sure you do!
BalanceDiet Super Omega-3 is a supercritical fish oil. Many fish oils have 30% active omega-3 ingredients and 70% is a varying mixture of other components. However as a supercritical fish oil using QUELL we provide at least 75% active omega-3 ingredients leaving less room for non-essential compounds.
